There is nothing more frustrating than seeing your ball heading towards it's intended target only to bounce off line and stray from the hole. Golf is played on a natural, living surface, outdoors. "Rub of the green" is the term used in the rules of golf to define those wayward bounces that occur during your round of golf. Basically the concept is: It happens, deal with it!
In order to give you the best possible conditions for putting, a necessary evil must take place each year, aeration. As all golfers ascend to the green, the soil below gets compacted. When that happens, air and water have difficulty reaching all the way through the root structure and the grass suffers. The answer is to punch holes in the soil and top-dress with sand. The holes allow room for the soil to breath and break up the compaction. Topdressing with sand helps smooth the putting surface while still allowing the soil breathing room. While this does not make for premium putting conditions immediately afterward, it is necessary to have a prime putting surface for the season.
At Ruark Golf, we have finished the aeration process and the greens are coming back nicely. With all of the snow and rain we've had during the off-season, we should be in great shape for the golf season. So, knock the dust off your clubs and get ready to play. And, if you're still missing too many putts, just see one of our pros, we can help with that too.

Little Rodent

So, yesterday in a little town in Pennsylvania, a rodent was pulled out of his nice, comfortable den and asked by his human captors what he thought the weather would be. Naturally, if the same thing happened to you, you would not express yourself in the most dignified manner. "Six more weeks of winter for you to deal with." he proclaimed!
I don't know about you, but I've seen enough snow this year already. I'm not going to let a little varmint determine my future. I actually see more golf in my future. The good thing about the Ocean City area is that the snow doesn't stick around here forever. While we got more than usual this year, it does tend to disappear quicker here than most places west of us.
While we're waiting for the snow to leave, there is plenty to do to get ready to play. If you are planning a golf trip, be sure to call our Ruark Golf Call Center at 1-866-441-4536 soon. We have some great deals available for a Spring golf excursion, but with tee-times filling up you better hurry and book yours now! Also, our winter rates are exceptional this time of year. With our covered carts, you can keep your golf muscles in shape and be comfortable as well.
So dust of your sticks and let's show that little furball who is in charge. Let's tee it up!

Merry Christmas

While the cold December winds may be blowing outside and Christmas is fast approaching, golf will soon be televised from Hawaii. But, I'm sure there are a lot of people just itching to tee it up just like me.
One way to get ready for golf and knock out some Christmas shopping at the same time is to get Ruark Golf gift cards. Having lived there for a few years, I found it to be the "Gateway to the World." One of the great things about living there was the people I would have the pleasure of meeting from all around the globe.
One year for Thanksgiving, my neighbor Claudio invited me to dinner. Claudio from Italy, had a beautiful Peruvian wife named Bridgette. Claudio loved to cook so I knew I was in for a real treat. Also attending the dinner was Pedro from Spain and his beautiful wife Barbara from Brazil. There's something about South American women. Hmmm. But I digress. And finally there was the seventy-something retired flight attendant from Lufthansa Airlines in Germany who brought us some of her homemade "hooch".
As part of the toasting before dinner, Claudio mentioned how he thought Thanksgiving was one of the best American holidays. "It's great how families and friends gather to be truly thankful for all of their blessings and celebrate with a great feast." So, here I was, the lone American amongst friends from all parts of the world, celebrating an American tradition. It was quite a memorable experience. At least what I could remember prior to the "hooch"!
As we approach this Thanksgiving, while times may be tough we still have much to be thankful for. Here in Ocean City, Maryland, we have a beautiful setting in which we get to experience our daily lives. Here at Ruark Golf, we are thankful to all of you who make the trip to experience our wonderful courses and facilities. We hope you have a chance to gather with family and friends this holiday season and maybe even throw in a little golf together as well.

You're Slow!

You’re paired with Bill, Tom and Joey.
I’m not playing with Joey.
Joey, overhearing this, “Why not?”
“You’re slow and you smell funny.”
I’m not slow.
You’re slow!
Why am I slow?
You’re never ready to hit when it’s your turn. You’re too busy telling a story or fiddling with your clubs. You want to wait and watch the group behind you hit up so you can comment on their shots. You seem to have no awareness as to your position on the course. We get other groups on our tail, leaning on their clubs waiting for you and it makes me have to hurry my shots to make up for your SLOW PLAY.
Oh! So what! That’s how I play.
Yeah that’s why you don’t get better.
How’s that?
Well. If you used some simple tips to play faster, you would be able to get into a rhythm, you’d be able to establish pre-shot routines that would help you hit better shots, more often. You’d have more time for each actual shot if you saved time in between shots by being ready to go.
Well how can I play faster?
First off, you have to make it a priority to play quicker. Know your position on the course. Have your shot already planned out before it’s your turn, so you can be ready the moment it is your turn. You can bring several clubs with you to your ball so you have the right club for which ever shot option you choose. Then, sit right in the cart with your clubs and ride to your cart partner’s ball and then put them in your bag.
When you’re putting, providing you don’t interfere with your fellow players, you can read your putt while the others are reading theirs. Do all the figuring out ahead of time so that you can play as soon as it’s your turn.
You’ll find that the round will be much more enjoyable and you’ll play better too.
You’ll still smell funny, but you’ll play better.
Thanks, I guess.

Fall In Ocean City

Fall in Ocean City. What a great time of year to be here. The weather is spectacular. The beach crowds have gone back to work. The restaurants are offering specials. We have Bike Week, the Classic Car weekend and the Corvette weekend as offerings for the road warriors. But more importantly, the golf courses are in great shape and with the slightly cooler weather, it makes for a great time to tee it up.
You pull up to the golf course. There's a slight crisp to the air. Steam rises from your cup of coffee and your buddy says "You're going down and you're going down hard". Game on!
A few hours later. While basking in the glow of victory and downing the beers paid for by your "overly confident" buddy, you feel the need to remind him of the wayward flight of his golf ball on several occasions today. Rub it in, rub it in.
It's OK though. A great steak at Ruth's Chris will make the bad shots disappear. At least until you bring it up again.
